Who let the Dogs Out?!

Who? Who? Who Who Who?

Don't pretend like you didn't just sing that in your head.  Because you know you did.  I am sure you are wondering why in the world I would reference such a horrid song as the title of this post... Well folks, it is time for my ten year reunion!  That's right.  10 freakin years.  How did that fly by so fast?

I am part of the planning committee for this Bulldog reunion so it has been an ongoing process for the past several months.  With that being said, I wanted to focus a post on who I was my senior year in high school and how I feel about that girl today.  This is the most serious post that I have written in a while... but this blog is my time capsule ...thus it needs to be written.

Enter fall 2001 - Spring 2002:

Senior Year.  I was both thrilled and terrified.  Most of my male friends had graduated last spring so I felt like I was entering school with only half my friend base.  But, I still had 9 lovely females to experience senior year and all its glory.  I was still painfully shy and serving my second year on Varsity Cheer.  There is a type of unspoken entitlement that I think comes with being a senior.  You watch the seniors "rule the school" for years.  Then it's your chance.  You finally understand why those seniors were pissed off when you were dating the "upperclassman" or infiltrating their parties.  It's your year.  Your time to shine before you embark on whatever journey is next.

I loved being a senior.  I loved being the older girl on the cheer squad and enjoyed doing things with the juniors who were on Varsity.  Several of them ended up feeling like a little sister and I enjoyed taking the older sister position.  I enjoyed trying to set them up with boys in my grade.  And I enjoyed dishing my extra year of wisdom upon them.

However, when I think about my senior year, most of it has nothing to do with school.   I had a boyfriend.  He was THE boyfriend.  I was convinced that this was it for me.  That he was it for me.  He was a year older and already in his freshman year at college.  He was a disease.  Dramatic but honest.

I was a member of 2 competitive cheer squads and my Varsity school squad.  Which meant I had almost no free time.  What little free time I had, I spent with this disease.  He was charming, good looking, and most importantly always putting me down to feel like he was all I could get.

I learned to lie.  To my friends.  To my parents.  I learned to lie to everyone except him.  Because I needed to defend him.  And the lie was inevitably better than whatever truth we were currently enduring.

I learned that trust was just a theory.  After months of fighting because he refused to go to prom with me but wouldn't let me go stag or with any of my guy friends, he finally accepted my invitation.  I paid of course.  But the kicker was that he slept with another girl the week before prom.  And told me about it 2 days before.  Oh, we went to prom.  And I "had" a fantastic time with the smiling photos to show for it.  Only to have him proposition my best friend at the after party.  Winner, this guy was.

I learned that facades are everything.  To "put on a face" and not let anyone know what was really going on.  I used to carry my makeup with me 24/7 because an all-out fight was bound to happen and I would inevitably have to make myself look like I hadn't been crying.  We would fight with such intensity that I would mentally black out and not have a clue what my side of the argument even was.

I learned to be paranoid.  And assume the world's goal was to break us up.  I had teachers and counselors at school confront me in the hallway after they had spent some weeks overhearing him screaming at me through my cellphone.  I had my parents start  enforcing super strict rules to try to get me away from him.

I learned that weight leads to judgement.  Around the same time, I quit drinking Dr. Pepper.  I went from 8 to 12 cans per day to just one can.  Needless to say, I dropped a bunch of weight and weighed 103lbs.  He was convinced that the weight loss was me preparing to date other guys and would weigh me constantly.  We would sit on his couch and he would feed me full of Chile's, ranch dressing and junk food... determined to fatten me up.

Over the years, I looked back at that relationship and where I was mentally, emotionally and spiritually.  I have tried to justify the actions, put the blame on myself exclusively and assume my memory isn't accurate.  All of this debate just reminds me of the grip the whole situation had on me.  Yes, I understand that half of the situation was my own fault.  I could have walked away.  I chose not to.

In hindsight, I think I'm both proud and sad for who I was back then.  I am sad that I had so little self-esteem that a relationship as torrential as ours was the best I thought I had.  More than that, I thought it was what I deserved.  I am sad that I let the whole situation spiral so desperately out of control and that it took away from what I should have been doing: enjoying my friends.

I am also proud of who I was.  I was strong for where I was at the time.  There were times I could have let go and ended everything but something told me not to.  I was strong to finally end the relationship with such definity that the years of lies that followed were merely nips at my heels.

It's weird to think about going back to see all those people from my senior year.  To know that I no longer am hiding anything, making excuses or feeling embarrassed.  Sure, I'm still shy sometimes!  But I have come a long way and no longer care about being accepted as I did then.  I am me.  I now have a very low tolerance for manipulation, passive-aggressiveness and control.  I am pleased with my life, my husband and our own little world we enjoy.  I am pleased that the girl I was then stopped existing by 2003.

I wish the me now could go back and slap myself and tell me to quit being a victim.  I wish I could show her nothing is worth being in that situation.  But I am also grateful for it.  It clearly defined what I want, what I stand for, what I believe and most importantly... it taught me respect.  It was years before I realized what a powerful lesson the whole situation was.  Respecting yourself is not something that should ever be taken for granted.

The woman I am today admires authenticity, joy, humor, growth and a positive, loving spirit.  I admire honesty and understand the importance of being present.  Present in both relationships and as a human being.  I am grateful daily and thank the Lord for everything and anything multiple times a day.  I work to be positive in my thoughts and enthusiastic about every blessing.  But the point is... I work.  Constantly.  Life is a journey that requires growth, appreciation and adaptation... and I am working every day to follow the path that has been written for me.

So cheers to the Bulldog Reunion in 2012 and all the journeys that brought us to where we are today.

Be careful of your thoughts,
For your thoughts become your words;
Be careful of your words,
For your words become your actions;
Be careful of your actions,
For your actions become your habits;
Be careful of your habits,
For your habits become your character;
Be careful of your character,
For your character becomes your destiny.

Cruizin - Caymans

Our last stop on the cruise was the Cayman Islands.  I went there when I was about 12 so I knew exactly what I wanted to do: Sting-Ray City Sandbar.  This was my favorite part of Cayman so I really wanted J to be able to experience it.

I tend to be a sucker for catamarans but since we had some little ones with us, we opted for a boat that had easy access to the water... AKA a staircase on back.  The boat was amazing and even had a full bar!

J and I couldn't pass up trying Cayman's local brew! :)

Side Note: I was pretty dang excited that my mom got me a UV protectant Rash Guard for this trip!  (If you are wondering why I am in long sleeves).   I burn REALLY easily.  As in, my mom used to have to put sunblock in my hair before school everyday because my scalp would burn during recess.   So it was perfect for our day in Cayman :)

Sting Ray City is a spot in the middle of the ocean where the sandbar creates a shallow, beach like setting.  I'm 5'3 and the water was just under my bellybutton.  The stingrays are wild and come to feed from buckets of squid that they bring with each excursion.  I chose not to feed them just because I didn't want to touch the squid.  I am lame, I know.  My cousin's 5 year old did....

But I did pet them!

And J held one.... and kissed it.  Supposedly it's 7 years good luck for each kiss!  Here's hopin'! :)

The whole excursion was pretty brief.  A quick ride out there.... a while with the stingrays and then the quick ride back.

We own our own snorkel gear so after the stingray adventure, we stopped at 7 Mile Beach and ate lunch.  We snorkeled a little but unfortunately the good snorkeling areas were too far away for us to make it back to the cruise ship in time.

I enjoyed spending most of the time at the beach chatting with my aunt and my mom.  It was a lot of fun just sitting and chatting with my aunt because I do not see her often so the catching up doesn't happen as often as it should.  Such a fun day with my family!  Makes me want to go back to Cayman's for another week... or live there ;)

I hope you have enjoyed my cruise recap!  Hoping that another tropical vacation isn't too far away :)

Cruizin - Jungle style

Honduras... ahhh Honduras.  I was super excited for Honduras since Belize got rained out.  I had researched a lot of blogs, chat rooms and word of mouth about what the best excursion was in Honduras and everyone said the same thing: the Zip-Line through the Jungle.  On the reviews, many people saw monkeys and ended by going to a small zoo area where they were able to cuddle with said monkeys.... BUT we chose the zip-line/beach day.

Mainly because with small kids in our group, not everyone could do the zip-line and this was the one day when we were trying to do a more family-oriented excursion.  They were all ending at the same beach so we opted for that choice instead.

The zip line was amazing.  We drove just 35 minutes up the jungle to the very top where the zip-line started.  I was told it was over 400ft by the tour guy who buckled me into my harness.  I am unsure the actual height but dang... we seemed WAY up there.  The view was breathtaking.

Before starting the tour, we had to sign a waiver which I never get too thrilled about.  And it specified acceptable weights and ages for this excursion.  It made me nervous... was the weight limit based on the ability of the cables? The strength of the harness?  What if someone lies and I have to go after them?

But ... I soon detected that the weight limit was do to unhooking and re-hooking your harness at each stop.  There were several stopping points where there would be an attendant on the pedestal attached to the tree where they would unhook you from the cable you just came down and hook you to the new one for the next "zip" ... ;)

In order to unhook you and re-hook you, the attendant had to bounce you up... this was done by you pulling yourself up with both hands as much as possible, then the attendant would bounce you up to unhook the latch.  Usually this bouncing was done by shoving their knee under your butt and lifting/unlatching in a quick motion before you land on the pedestal and get re-hooked.

This made much more sense and made me have a little more faith in the whole shebang.  J went down before me and my mom followed with my dad, cousins, aunt and uncle after him.

Hi Mom!

I didn't see any monkeys but J and I sure did enjoy the whole thing!

Except... we did have some weirdness with the giant gloves they give you.  In order to stop, you have to pull down with your back hand to slow you down... thus they give you one-size-fits-all heavy duty gloves.  Within 8 hours of wearing that glove, the back of my left hand broke out in some weird red splotchy-ness.  I don't want to call it a rash because it never spread.  But either way... I still have this red mark on the back of my hand and J has it on one of his knuckles.  This photo was taken 2 days ago... AKA 10 days post Honduras.

Creepy.  No one else from our trip has it.  The only thing we can think of is that we immediately doused our hands in hand sanitizer and everyone else just waited to wash them at the beach.  (Which we did also).   Either way... it worries me a little.  Eeek!

Moving on...

We then went to Tabyana beach where we lounged until time to go back to the ship.  The beach was beautiful!  It was one of the most beautiful beaches I have seen in a long time... up there with Magen's Bay in St. Thomas.

And of course we had to drink Coronas :)

Cruizin - Cozumel

As a completely random side note to that last post.... You are not Adele.  Choosing her songs for every karaoke session will not end pretty.  She is amazing and no matter how awesome you are, you will not sound as amazing as she does.  End Rant. ;)

Moving on .... Cozumel was our first stop on our cruise... and it was also our FAVORITE excursion of the whole week!  When we first started looking at excursions, one stuck out and was deemed the "priority" excursion.  So we booked it pretty much immediately.  What was this excursion you ask?  Motorcycle Tour of the Island.  I usually prefer not to use this word but it was amaze-balls!  Seriously.

In order to be part of the excursion you had to have a motorcycle license.  This was awesome because there were only 8 people on the excursion (4 couples) so it was intimate and exciting.  We had two guides: Carlos drove the lead Harley and directed us where to go, Sergio drove a pick-up behind the group which carried our bags and bottled water.

We started our trek on some back roads that were literally only about 4 feet away from the ocean.  It was hot but the breeze from the ocean made it nice and relaxing.  We then got on the highway to get to our next area.  The highway isn't the typical american highway so it was not as frightening as I would have been in the US but it was still a little nerve-racking.  We got up to 75mph which was faster than I have ever been on a motorcycle.

The next stop was a little town called Cedral.  We took a lot of dirt back roads to get there and it was amazing getting to see the beautiful cottages as we cruised.

We stopped in Cedral for some water and Carlos gave us the town history.  Apparently, Cedral was the original town on the island.  Now, it is mostly vacation homes for families on the island but it was so much fun listening to its origins.  I love history so this was a special part of the excursion for me.

After we had our break in Cedral, we continued to the our next stop.  We stopped off at a "look-out point" where the ocean had made a blow-hole in the rocks.

We then continued on our trek around the island until we stopped for our "beach-break" ...  When the excursion description said there would be a beach-break, I was assuming that the end of the trip would be near a beach where we could hang out or go back to the ship.  I didn't realize that A) it would be in the middle of the ride and B) that we had the option to swim.   My bad.

The beach area we stopped at was INCREDIBLE.  It had a large restaurant where we could change, pee, get boozed up or relax.  The restaurant does not run on regular power which J and I thought was awesome.  (They were actually installing another wind turbine while we were there)....  The beach by the restaurant was no where near any hotels or touristy spots so it was calm, beautiful and most importantly empty of cruise passengers ;)

The beach had some rocks that created a natural swimming pool with fresh water.  Oh, I wanted to get in it so bad.  Oh Well.   We relaxed in hammocks and enjoyed the view.

Lunch was also included in the excursion which I figured would be sketchy due to our diet.  BUT, it was amazing!  The food we ate on the beach was the best food we had all week... and quite honestly, the best fish I have EVER had!  The restaurant caught everything fresh that morning so we were literally eating the first batch of the fresh concoctions.  They served fish and shrimp tacos family-style with guacamole, beans, salsa, and with your choice of flour or corn tortillas.  They also made ceviche which was, once again, amaze-balls!  I had planned on taking photos but got wrapped up in the deliciousness and forgot.  oops.  I wish all food was that fresh.

*on a completely random note: Sergio also made me this cute little grasshopper out of grass near the beach!

The remainder of the ride got a little more adventurous.  A 20 minute rain storm rolled into town which made me glad I was wearing long-sleeves and jeans.  I had never been on a motorcycle in the rain but it was actually fun... even though we were soaked.  We took a quick cruise through downtown Cozumel and then returned to our starting point.  At the end of the excursion, they had mexican beer waiting for us.  J and I agreed that it was definitely one of the top 3 most enjoyable things we have ever done.

So if you go to Cozumel - look up Sergio and Carlos with their Harley tour.  I promise you won't be disappointed :)

Our Snorkel trip in Belize got rained out ... so next up:  Cruizin - Jungle Style (Honduras)

Cruizin - The Ship

This past week, J and I had the opportunity to go on a cruise with my family!   It was very eventful and a lot of fun so I wanted to recap it with a few posts.  Yes, a few posts.  You know how much I like pictures... so I have to do more than one post :)

Back Story:
My Aunt's 50th birthday was coming up and she had been chewing over a few ideas of how she wanted to celebrate.  She decided that the best way to celebrate would be with all of our family spending time together on a vacation somewhere. My Dad and my Uncle thought it was a fabulous idea and decided they would try to get our whole family together for a once in a life-time vacation.  There were 22 of us... so this does not happen very often.

Of course, J and I were on board immediately!  We only get to see my dad's brother and his fam about once a year so we were thrilled at the idea of spending time with them  ... AND get a sweet vacation!

Plus...  I had racked up a bunch of miles on Southwest for work so we got our flights for free.  Yahtzee! ;)

J and I had never been on a cruise so we were a little unsure about what to expect.  We left from Miami and headed on our way....

So anyways... here is my recap of the basics: Life on-board

  • Expectation:  Classy Claustrophobia
  • Reality:  Tiny Perfection
I tend to feel claustrophobic in tight spaces that don't have an easy escape route... so the idea of sleeping in a tiny room on a giant vessel in the middle of the ocean was a little nerve-racking.  How did it turn out?  Awesome!  We had a nice King bed with ample space on either side, a desk/vanity, an surprisingly roomy bathroom and 3 closets.  Score!

Yes, silly pictures were a must....

  • Expectation:  Booze-Cruise
  • Reality:  Dang it.
I happen to ADORE all-inclusive resorts so the fact that we had to pay for drinks on the boat was a little disappointing.  I also bought a "coke-card" which everyone said was a must for a Dr.Pepper drinker like myself.  But it ended up being a waste.  It was $50 which ended up equating to 25 Dr. Peppers.  How many did I drink on the ship?
    5.  LAME!
    *Sucker*
But we did have some fabulous drinks regardless...

  • Expectation:  Lazy Days
  • Reality:  Mini-Vegas
The ship had 3 pools and a water slide!  They also had an "Adults Only" area that I kind of relished in.  I had assumed that the cruise would mostly be pools and naps but they had stuff going on CONSTANTLY!  One night they played Lion King on the huge screen above the pool.  We opened a bottle of wine and had a heck of a time.  I love Disney.  They also had all sorts of shows, a casino ... and Karaoke every night!

My family had SO much fun at karaoke... I even have the videos to prove it ;)
I burn EASY and we don't care for gambling so J and I spent a lot of the trip just relaxing in our room, watching movies.  A Perfect Vacation is a Relaxing one :)

  • Expectation:  Scattered
  • Reality:  Family Fun, All the Time
I was expecting it to be hard to keep track of all 22 of us and really wanted to make a point of spending time with everyone.  Especially with my parents, my sis & bro-in-law and their 4 yr old daughter.  BUT, it was surprisingly easy.  Each room was given a walkie-talkie so we could meet up for the various events around the ship, for dinner, etc. It was nice to be able to go relax and nap in the room but then be able to find everyone when we needed to.   And it was especially fun getting to see these 3 little ladies and how pumped they were about everything:

  • Expectation:  Roughin' It
  • Reality:  Booty-Lovin' Buffet
With J and I's eating style, I was pretty nervous about the food selection.  We had a scheduled dining time of 6PM in the main dining room each evening.  Before the trip, we had the travel agent inform the ship of our dietary needs and then my sis contacted the ship again to make sure.  We were told that there would be no vegan friendly food on board so I was assuming that I would be eating a lot of granola bars.   Truth - the food was rough.  It is incredibly hard to find dairy-free items in such a mass-produced setting.  Even the "steamed" veggies were dunked in lots of booty-lovin' butter.  (Fun Fact: The average cruise-goer gains 7 to 14 lbs during the week... for real!)   After a few stomach aches, we decided to stick to what we knew were fail proof... AKA...
      • PB & J
      • Baked Potato with lemon juice
      • Fruit
      • Veggie patty with veggie fixin's
... and J enjoyed some Alligator... it was dang tasty.

  • Expectation:  Random Critters
  • Reality:  Da Vinci aint got nothin' on this!
You can't go on a cruise without automatically assuming you will get some fine art each night in the form of a towel.  Hmmm... well that just sounded weird.  Anyway - Carnival did not let down! We received some fine animals!

All except the last night.  They had apparently run out of the black eyes, because it just had red paper eyes.  After a quick debate, we decided that it looked more like a demon than an animal and promptly threw it off the bed.... thus no photo.

    The Sting Ray

The Rabbit

The Elephant
 The Dog
... I may or may not have insisted it should sleep on the bed in place of Cleo
.... Yes, I am a freak.

 The Dino

and .. The Monkey!

Next up: Cruizin - Cozumel   .....   stay tuned ;)
